We’ve Added New Camera Background Effects!

We’re delighted to share that we’ve revamped our camera background effects to provide more calm, professional backgrounds during a Whereby session.

What’s changed?

This update refreshes both the look and performance of camera background effects with thoughtful design improvements and noticeable quality upgrades. We’ve recently improved the:

1. Background images: We introduced a curated set of new virtual backgrounds with softer lighting, neutral tones, and minimal, uncluttered effects that feel clean and professional without being distracting. These new backgrounds are intentionally simple to support focus during sessions.

   

2. Selection options: Instead of offering a wide selection of styles, we focused on providing a smaller set of reliable, high-quality options designed to work well across different settings. The current camera background effects offer environments that are neutral, steady, and dependable.

3. Rendering quality: We’ve improved background rendering to reduce flickering, halo effects, and pixelation around edges. Now, you’ll have a more stable overall appearance on camera during sessions.

How can I apply the new effects?

When joining a Whereby session, click on the Effects icon located at the far left in the waiting room. You’ll be redirected to the effects settings, where you can apply these new backgrounds.

You can also access it during a session by hovering over the camera icon in the toolbar and clicking on ‘Background Effects’.

Alternatively, on Whereby Embedded rooms, you can set a default camera background effect using the cameraEffect=<effect> URL parameter. Learn how to use URL parameters here.

The new effects are available on both Whereby Meetings and Whereby Embedded accounts (including free plans).

This refresh is part of our ongoing commitment to improve on-screen presence and the quality of sessions on Whereby. We’ll keep refining them for an even better user experience over time.
